What Is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is the clinical term for eyelid surgery, also known as an eyelid lift. This surgical procedure reshapes the upper or lower eyelids by reducing excess skin, fat, or muscle. The goal of the procedure is to rejuvenate the eyes, helping you look more alert, youthful, and rested. Dr. Patt has expertise in achieving both cosmetic and functional improvements.

Upper Blepharoplasty

Excess skin and fat on the upper eyelids can create a heavy, drooping appearance that makes you look tired and may even interfere with your vision. During upper eyelid surgery, Dr. Patt makes a precise incision hidden in the natural crease of the eyelid and removes or repositions tissue. In some cases, the eyelid muscles are tightened to lift the lids to a more natural, youthful position.

Lower Blepharoplasty

Lower eyelid surgery targets puffiness, bags, and sagging beneath the eyes. Depending on your needs, Dr. Patt may use a hidden incision inside the eyelid (transconjunctival approach) to remove or reposition fat or place a fine incision just below the lashes to remove excess skin.

Who’s a Good Candidate?

You may be an ideal candidate for blepharoplasty surgery if you:

  • Have sagging or drooping upper eyelids that impair your appearance or vision
  • Notice puffiness, under-eye bags, or excess skin on the lower lids
  • Are bothered by looking tired even when well-rested
  • Are in good overall health and have realistic expectations

During your consultation, Dr. Patt will carefully evaluate your facial anatomy, concerns, and goals and recommend a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

What Is Eyelid Surgery Recovery Like?

Blepharoplasty is typically an outpatient procedure with a relatively quick recovery (10 to 14 days). Most patients experience mild swelling and bruising, which typically subsides within 7 to 10 days. Cold compresses, head elevation, and prescription eye drops minimize discomfort and promote healing. Stitches (if used) are usually removed within a week, and most patients return to work and social activities within 1 to 2 weeks. Final results reveal brighter, smoother, more youthful-looking eyes.

Does Blepharoplasty Affect Your Vision?

In some cases, blepharoplasty can help you look—and see—better. If drooping upper eyelids are obstructing your line of sight, the surgery can help improve your field of vision. By removing excess skin and tightening the eyelid area, patients often experience a wider, clearer visual field. While the procedure is not designed to correct vision problems like nearsightedness or astigmatism, it can make daily activities such as reading and driving easier.

What Procedures Are Combined with Eyelid Surgery?

Although Dr. Patt performs blepharoplasty as a stand-alone procedure, he frequently combines it with other facial enhancements like a facelift or brow lift. Popular complementary procedures include:

  • Facelift and Neck lift: Restores smoothness and youthful contours to the lower face and neck
  • Brow lift: Lifts sagging brows that may contribute to hooded eyes
  • Laser skin resurfacing: Improves fine lines, wrinkles, and skin texture around the eyes
  • Injectables: Targets expression lines, such as crow’s feet and frown lines, as well as vertical neck bands.

Dr. Patt’s thoughtful, holistic approach helps patients achieve balanced, comprehensive rejuvenation. He prioritizes your concerns and aesthetic vision to design a treatment plan that fits your goals, budget, and timeline.

Blepharoplasty FAQs

Will blepharoplasty get rid of dark circles under my eyes?

Lower blepharoplasty improves puffiness and bags, resulting in reduced shadows beneath the eyes. However, dark circles caused by skin pigmentation may require treatments such as laser resurfacing or other nonsurgical solutions.

How long do the results last?

Blepharoplasty results typically last 7 to 10 years, and in many cases, the improvements are permanent. While aging continues, patients often look younger than if they had never undergone eyelid surgery.

Is blepharoplasty painful?

Most patients report minimal discomfort during recovery. Any soreness or tightness is usually well managed with over-the-counter or prescribed medication.
