It’s not uncommon for both men and women who suffer from hair loss to become overwhelmed, and subsequently discouraged, with the amount of information available on the internet. Below are some of the most popular and effective hair restoration treatments modern technology has to offer. Hopefully this information will point readers in the right direction.

Laser Treatments

Not so long ago, if a doctor had suggested using lasers to treat a patient's thinning hair, he would have sounded crazy. Today, though, lasers are commonly used for everything from reducing the appearance of wrinkles to, yes, restoring hair growth. Most treatments work by stimulating new growth from aging follicles, and although a few treatments may be required, they are generally painless.

Hair Transplants

The idea of hair transplantation may also sound a bit unorthodox to those not in the know. It's simpler than it sounds, though, and is a very effective tool in combating male patterned baldness. A specialist can simply harvest hair follicles from areas that are still producing ample amounts of hair and transplant them to those most impacted by baldness. This procedure is known as FUE, or “follicular unit extraction,” and is performed out-patient, although a local anesthetic is required.

Prescription Minoxidil

Minoxidil is a popular product for hair restoration. It is available over the counter at some pharmacies. However, prescription brands are significantly stronger and more effective. Getting a prescription from the doctor ensures that that patients are receiving the maximum safe dosage, allowing better and more immediate results.

Shampoos and Other OTC Treatments

Simply put, not all products are created equal. While some shampoos do an excellent job of preventing existing hair from falling out and stimulating new growth, others are just a waste of money. The ones that work provide results through adding much-needed nutrients to existing hair follicles to help them continue to produce healthy hair. The ones that don't are much more prevalent, and it can be extremely hard to tell the difference. The best thing to do is to ask a doctor or other professional for recommendations prior to purchasing any over-the-counter products.
