While you can't stop the aging process, you can benefit from innovative anti-aging surgical and non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments offered by Dr. Bradford S. Patt, MD, FACS at the Houston Center for Facial Plastic Surgery to reduce the effects of aging and keep you looking younger and healthier.

Let us define facial rejuvenation: Facial rejuvenation is a cosmetic treatment with the goal of restoring the human face to a youthful appearance. It can be achieved through both non-surgical and/or surgical options. Each procedure can vary in depth and invasiveness.

Surgical Procedures

There are numerous surgical facial rejuvenation procedures. Below are a few with their pros and cons.

Facelift Procedure

A facelift is a more costly treatment option offered for facial rejuvenation. Although it's a procedure commonly performed with a great safety record, it’s still surgery, meaning deciding on having a facelift done is serious.

A facelift may be an ideal option for you when you:

  • Are trying to eliminate fat and sagging skin, particularly resulting in a less defined chin.

  • Have distinguished jowls you're wanting to eliminate.

  • Are able to take two weeks for recovery.

  • Have deep skin folds that produce thick lines around your mouth and nose.

A facelift can make you look younger in various ways.

Pros:

  • They repair loose skin.

  • They tighten facial muscles.

  • The effects last a long time.

  • They improve facial contours.

  • They're becoming increasingly affordable.

Cons:

  • There's a lot of aftercare needed.

  • Surgery is always risky.

  • It is a costly procedure.

  • It does take time to recover.

Eyelid Surgery

Two types of eyelid surgery are:

  1. Upper eyelid surgery: Helps restore your eyes to a naturally refreshed appearance due to the removal of excess skin.

  2. Lower eyelid surgery:  The best treatment for correcting eyelid hollowing and bags.

Pros:

  • Eyelid surgery wipes out eye puffiness.

  • It eliminates the fine lines around the outer edges of your eyes.

  • It reduces eye bags around your lower eyelids.

  • It eliminates hooded skin around your upper eyelids.

  • It makes your eyes appear younger.

  • It makes your face healthier and refreshed.

  • It removes fat that blocks your eyes, which improves peripheral vision.

Cons:

  • It takes time for results to show.

  • There can be some bruising, scarring and swelling after the procedure.

  • Some asymmetry in your eyes could be noticeable.

  • It can cause dryness and itching.

  • It can cause temporary blindness and double vision (lasts only a couple hours after your procedure and you gain vision back in a day).

Endoscopic Brow Lift

An endoscopic brow lift isn't as invasive as a traditional brow lift. It employs the use of a tiny camera and a series of small incisions.

Pros:

  • It treats sagging eyelid skin that makes you look fatigued and grumpy.

  • It treats drooping eyebrows which obstruct vision.

  • It makes you look friendlier, alert and more pleasant.

  • It removes forehead creases and frown lines between your eyebrows.

  • It makes you look years younger.

Cons:

  • There can be scarring, bleeding, fluid accumulation and eye irritation.

  • There can be hair loss around the incision sites.

  • If you have had a previous heart condition, the anesthesia involved could cause problems during your procedure.

Facial Implants

Facial implants help reconstruct, augment or rejuvenate your facial contours. You can receive them in a wide range of styles and sizes and restore proportion and/or contour to your face.

Pros:

  • Corrects facial deficiencies and asymmetry, particularly the cheek, chin or jaw.

  • A relatively quick procedure with permanent results.

  • Doesn’t require procedures on other areas of your body (like fat grafting from your abdomen to add facial volume).

Cons:

  • The potential for infection, leading to implant removal.

  • Facial nerve and muscular damage possible.

  • Potential contour abnormalities if implants shift.

Non-Surgical Procedures

Here are a few non surgical rejuvenaton procedures:

Non-Surgical Facelifts

Because there are numerous non-surgical facelift options available, individuals are opting for these increasingly. There is a variety of non-surgical facial rejuvenation techniques include:

  • Dermal fillers

  • Botox

  • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

  • Laser lifts

  • Ultrasound

  • Fat transfer

  • Kybella

There's a popular non-surgical technique known as "liquid facelift" which combines dermal facial fillers and botox, providing you with a facelift effect without surgery or anesthesia.

Pros:

  • They're cost-effective.

  • The procedure is brief.

  • There's no serious pain involved.

  • Recovery time is minimal.

  • It results in a naturally rejuvenated appearance.

  • The aftercare is minimal.

  • Fewer risks are involved.

Cons:

  • There are added costs over a time period.

  • It does require regular touch-ups.

Tissue Fillers

As you get older, your lifestyle choices and the elements cause your facial skin to become wrinkled, lax and saggy. A main cause is hyaluronic acid loss. This is a substance your body produces naturally.  As you age, your body slows down on the production of hyaluronic acid.

Dermal fillers like Restylane and Juvederm are an effective way to sculpt, firm and rejuvenate affected areas while they work as collagen stimulants. These can help treat:

  • Marionette lines

  • Jowls

  • Volume loss

  • An aging neck

  • A lax jawline

  • Chin wrinkles

  • Nasolabial folds (smile lines)

Pros:

  • Non-invasive and quick treatment.

  • Easily accomplish various goals with many filler choices.

Cons:

  • Results last for varying times (typically from several months to up to a year).

  • Requires repeat treatment to maintain the effects.

  • Costs of treatment and touch-ups can add up.

Laser Treatments

Laser treatments can consist of laser skin resurfacing and laser skin tightening. Both are easy methods to address subtle aging signs.

Pros:

  • Long-lasting results.

  • Smooths wrinkles.

  • Tightens skin.

  • Evens out skin tone.

  • Treats sun damage.

  • Treats acne scars.

  • Provides the skin with a beautiful glow.

  • Stimulates collagen production.

  • Eliminates age and brown spots.

Cons:

  • The more powerful the laser — the more potential of side effects like darkening or lightening of the skin, cold sores or scarring.

  • Longer recovery period.

  • Skin redness following treatment that will become worse before it gets better.

BOTOX

A popular non-surgical treatment is BOTOX. It's also one of the first facial rejuvenation treatments. It's a cosmetic form of botulinum toxin which temporarily reduces or eliminates facial lines, including:

By removing the tension out of the muscles associated with wrinkles, your face ends up appearing younger, smoother and more refreshed. BOTOX also helps with excessive sweating, relieving migraine headaches and reducing muscle spasms in your eyes and neck.

Although these injections are easy and quick, a board-certified plastic surgeon should still be the only one to perform the treatment. If BOTOX administered by a person who isn't trained properly, the injections can lead to facial pain, drooping eyelids and muscle weakness.

Pros:

  • Relaxes muscles around and between the eyes and on the forehead, which produces outstanding results.

  • Softens wrinkles and provides a refreshed appearance.

Cons:

  • There is a little pain involved.

  • Could cause flu-like symptoms (rare) and headache.

  • Small chance of bruising.
